Summary
William Laurence was a good officer and a careful magician. In the navy, he rationed his magic with the utmost precision, ever conscious that all magicians had an upper limit: a lifetime allotment which, if exhausted, would bring inevitable and painful death. Real witches, it was always said, did not need any external stake or flame. Real witches—unwise witches—burned themselves.
Laurence was not unwise. Laurence would have been promoted to flag rank and well out of any need for magic long before he exhausted that allotment.
And then Temeraire hatched, and all of his careful plans were shattered.

Summary
Temeraire is dead.
Temeraire is dead, and Laurence’s reason for living along with him. He stumbles on, day by day, conscious of the concern of his friends and family, yet unable to care.
Until an unexpected letter leads Laurence to something even more unexpected still: a child.
What a Chinese orphan is doing on the streets of Edinburgh is anyone’s guess, including the orphan's. Tharkay, for his part, suspects foul play. Laurence can see all that is sensible in the man’s suspicions, yet once again he cannot bring himself to care. Not when the child reminds him so very strongly of that which he’s lost.

Summary
Laurence saw all of this clearly, for the moment seemed queerly slow, as if each instant were preserved as a painting in all its ponderous detail. The moment after, in contrast, was too quick to perceive. Laurence did not see Tharkay collapse, only saw him on the deck, crumpled.
Only a few weeks into the Allegiance's voyage to Australia, misfortune dealt Tharkay an injury which could easily have been fatal.

Written for Temeraire Summer 2026 for this prompt:
show me our heroes in the weirdest AU you can come up with. I'm talking like, start from something basic (like 'high fantasy' or 'superheroes') and keep going with weird-ifying it, either in the direction of making it bizarre, or in the direction of going deep into the implications of more typical worldbuilding. Like idk. Sentinel AU but imply that sentinels exist because humanity was competing with dragons to be the dominant species for most of our evolution. Surprise me!
I'm afraid I didn't go super crazy with this human sized Temeraire AU as I had something originally planed but just ran out of time.
