Liam holds his gaze, magnetic even behind his glasses. He licks his lips and smiles at him, sweet and open and happy. The way he used to smile at Noel at five, fifteen, and twenty.

The world kept spinning, but it spun sideways. Liam never stopped being someone his body could want. Noel promised himself, fucking promised, that he'd never tell. Promised he'd never ruin them.
He lay in Liam's hotel room, sweat cooling on his skin until goose flesh broke out over the cast of his body, and Liam snored beside him. He came down from his high. He could see the mess they'd made — their dark filth spread across the white sheets and his torn shirt laying abandoned on the ground. The American air-con unit kicked on with a metallic clank and he began to shiver. A pit started to form in the his stomach, and his throat tightened like a noose had wrapped around it, pulling at him, tugging him backwards into what he'd done. His band, their band, fucking broken. He'd failed. All that dreaming they'd done, all the fucking — grafting. For what? A fucking failure of a show in LA? Like they didn't even care. Like it didn't mean nowt to them.
