Summary
Eugene Roe is a medic, but he is also a traiteur: it's his job to take away the pain, even if it kills him. And it might just be killing him.
One day in Holland the cold creeps under the collar of Roe’s jacket and doesn’t leave. It’s autumn still - September, sunny. Sure, nothing like Louisiana heat but not cold enough to explain the persistent shiver that runs through him. The tops of his cheeks feel like they’re burned with ice and the tip of his nose is chilled.
Something cold lands on his eyelid and when he looks up there are snowflakes wheeling down from the ceiling, hurrying to gather between the cracks of the flagstones under his feet. He puts out his hand - his fingers are pale and chapped, red at the knuckles and the fingertips - and a large flake drifts its way to land on his outstretched palm. Roe watches as it melts sluggish against his cold skin. He can feel it.
“Huh,” he says to himself, and then he blinks, and the snow is gone but the chill just stays.

“Let me tell you a secret,” Ben says, and suddenly his mouth is so close to Matt’s ear that his nose is buried in blonde hair and Matt can feel lips graze against his skin. Then, in a half whisper, half rasp, “You're the best actor in this whole place, they’ll spend their whole lives trying to be half as interesting as you are.”
Matt’s whole body shudders involuntarily. His mind goes completely blank.
But just as quickly as he had leaned in, Ben is now back at a 'normal' distance, grinning. “So you don't gotta worry.”
