“And Fahrenheit, God bless her, had to play nurse the whole time. I still owe her for that one. She never lets me forget it.”
“Because you went and got stabbed?” Nate finds himself almost smiling. He’s doing that a lot lately. It feels foreign still.
Hancock laughs, gravelly and deeply amused. “You shoulda seen the other guy, Nate, he picked the wrong day to try to fuck with one of mine.”
Nate’s half-smile grows. “Never knew a mayor to get in street brawls. Judging by what I’ve seen out here, you probably won all of them.”
Hancock beams. “Sure did. Most people know better. It’s more fun when they don’t.”
A sudden peal of thunder rumbles across the sky, distant yet but approaching quick. The sky starts to fade into that now-familiar sickly green-yellow, and Nate sighs as his bare smile falls away.
“God dammit,” he says softly.

Summary
"I'm gonna have a chair parked at the top of the stairs, you just call for me if ya need me, alright?" Hancock says, voice low as he grabs a pack of cigarettes and a flip lighter from his bag. He thumbs open the time-worn cardboard box and taps a cigarette free, popping it into his mouth and stuffing the pack into his pocket. A deft flick and the lighter sparks to life, casting a warm glow over his face as he tilts his head to light up. The red swell of the cherry makes his eyes shine like rubies under the shadow of his hat.
Nate can't tear his eyes away from Hancock's weathered hands, following every bend and flex of his long fingers. He's been struggling with that a lot lately.

Summary
“You doin’ okay down here, pal?” Hancock calls, legs coming into view as Nate startles, naked as the day he was born. “Got awful quiet, even for you.”
Nate has no reason to feel as awkward as he does. He was in the military for God’s sake, he’s been bare naked around more men than he can count and there’s not a lot of shame to be had when you’re stationed far away from civilization and the amenities that come with it, so he can’t figure why he wants to run.

Hancock, it seems, also has no such compunctions about privacy; he comes right down and stops at the bottom of the stairs. “There’s a clean enough bed up there, too, you’d probably like to—“ He freezes. A beat of silence passes. "Sleep."
...
Hancock is watching him with a peculiar look; he’s never looked at anyone like this. Not Magnolia, or Fahrenheit, or Daisy, or anyone else they’ve been around together. Come to think of it, Hancock hasn’t really been around anyone that Nate has noticed. He looks like he’s piecing together a puzzle, or like he’s hungry. Or both.

GOODNEIGHBOR
The red neon sign hammered into the plywood walls stretched between two buildings in the Financial District stutters an irregular rhythm. Nate’s head is on a swivel as he picks his way closer to what looks like the front entrance, and there’s not much that looks good about any of this. He’s been told as much by just about everyone who knows he’s headed here today.

Garvey told him about this place on one of the rare occasions that they talked to each other about more than settlements, and the Minutemen, and recruitment, and Nate figured if he’s been thawed now for a couple of months maybe he should venture a little deeper into Boston and see what’s become of it, despite Garvey telling him to avoid it like the plague.
Nothing good, he’s learned.
