Pink Hearts and Max Hatter had spent years perfecting the art of getting under each other's skin. One could even say Pink—with all her spectacular eye rolls, sharp-tongued comebacks, and the occasional not-so-accidental shoulder check—had mastered every stroke needed to sketch the outline of their rivalry.
The trouble was, somewhere along the way, those same strokes had begun tracing little hearts instead. Ones she'd buried beneath layers of hatred, with M + P tucked neatly in the middle where no one—not even Max—would ever find them.
Pink had always thought the worst thing that could happen was Max Hatter discovering she'd liked him all along.
Then she started coughing up flower petals.

Laying on the floor, with the girl he had used to live with looming above him like a willow tree, he thinks about survival.
“But?” Percival inquires like a faded ghost struggling to keep hold on it’s tethers to the mortal plane.
“You need help.” She states quite plainly in her smooth cadence, and suddenly Percival thinks her voice has dropped to a baritone that reminds him of his father. There’s hospital antiseptic in his nose, and he remembers venom and snakebites in mid-December. His sense of the timeline is warped, and he can’t remember if this is an event that has happened or not, but the feeling that it has, and that it’s happened in a way that matters imminently, matters more than his certainty.
“No.” He says weakly, “No.” Because he is not the one that needs help, he draws a breath before elaborating, “I am not my father.”
“No.” She says just as firmly as her feet against the floor, “No.” In a cruel mimicry of his statement, she draws a slow breath before her next words, “He does not need help.”
