    Ilya knows that he’s throwing Shane for a loop, because in time gone by this was the prime opportunity for Ilya to flip them, pin Shane to the wall with one hand tightly gripping Shane’s wrists, and shut him up firmly. But all he can do now is stare at Shane and think I miss you, I’ve missed you, I will keep missing you. It’s like his eyes and his mind are having two different conversations. His eyes see Shane, and fuck, it’s good – but his mind sees tomorrow, and the next day, and the next, and finds them all lacking.

    Ilya isn’t doing so well during his first few months in Ottawa. He tries not to make a thing of it.

Shane told her that one of the first times he met Ilya, Ilya asked about Montreal and Boston if they were nice. That he was all of eighteen and by himself in a foreign country with a thick accent and rough English. The media likes to forget that he was a child, that he was alone.

    She wants to say that her husband is currently shopping for ingredients for desert for him. That Ilya is currently unpacking boxes with her son in his new house. A house he bought because Shane likes the yard, and the floor plan, and the kitchen design, and Ilya likes the big windows in the bedroom. Reminded him of the cottage he said in a video call a month ago. That he will eat the homegrown peaches and cherries and playfully taunt her son and husband when he beats them at cards.

    She can't say any of this.

    Or four times in four years Yuna Hollander just wants to brag about Ilya Rozanov and one time she finally gets to.

    Shane fixes him with his most withering glare. “Well, if I’m calling something boring, imagine how boring it actually is.”

    “I know you are trying to trick me, Hollander,” Ilya states, raising a single brow. “But you will not deny me my right as your husband to see baby Shane in his tiny little skates.”
