That, really, was too simplistic. It started with many, many stars losing luminosity, and two different species sending expeditions to the one nearby star that hadn’t. The survivors of those expeditions worked together, and solved the problem, and saved both their stars. That was the true start of it.
But for all practical purposes, it started with two space probes, passing each other in the blackness of space.
How the people of Earth and the people of Erid confuse pretty much all other space-faring peoples because they get along quite well, despite their differences.
