It was all so benign at first.
Heath couldn’t place exactly when it started. A year ago? Two? Three? Or maybe this was how he’s always been, and he was just too naive to notice. He tried to think back, to the first time this strange sense of nothingness crawled into his chest, but the days blended together and sloshed into some weird fevered mess of memories. In all honesty, it was just one of those kinds of things, like when you ate too much candy as a kid, where you didn’t know that you’d eaten too much until you were already sick.
