Summary
"I'm just saying you need to be realistic, Mike," Jack says. "Sarah gives me a chance at a real life—a family."
Robby closes his eyes, willing the tears away. There's so much he wants to say—why do you still live with me, then? Why aren't you at her place? He bites the words back. "And I don't? Being with me isn't a real life?"
The worst part is that he knows exactly what Jack means; he gets it, he really does.
"What do you want us to do, huh? Live as roommates for the rest of our lives and have our families pester us about finding wives? We can't even get fucking married!"
"Times are changing." Maybe if he says it out loud, that will make progress speed up. "It won't be like this forever."

Summary
“No, what’s deranged Michael, is you thinking you could fucking kill yourself out here, and I would just stay home to find out about it from some brainless small-town cop.” It rolls out of Jack, face hard, in a single wave full of vitriol and spit. His face is cold and detached, but his eyes are glassy, wet, and Michael wants to cry. He hates hurting Jack.
***
Michael leaves for his sabbatical ready to die, affairs neatly arranged and plan in place. Except he does not die, pushing it further and further away, searching for something.
He finds a hill, a lake, words, and Jack sitting on the porch of his rented cabin.
