The funny part was that Jared knew exactly where he stood in that line. He wasn't a contingency. He was a man who'd already placed his bet, and men who've already placed their bets get called one of two things in the next act. Witness, or accomplice. Neither role photographs well.
"It's a quiet meeting," the voice said. "Nothing on the official calendar. The person who wants to see you would like to do it in person. Your particular expertise."
Your particular expertise. Jared knew exactly how that phrase had been gift-wrapped. The ability to know where the market would die, and when, and in what order. A year ago it would have gotten him laughed out of a room. Now the government was booking hotel suites to buy it. That was markets for you. It's cheap when nobody wants it, and by the time everyone wants it, you're late.
"And the name of the person who wants to see me."
"You'll hear it when you get there."
Jared laughed. Not so the man on the phone could hear it.
