Rumi and Mira had a solo interview thing that was supposed to run for two hours, which meant Zoey had exactly two hours to turn their kitchen into a bungeoppang factory and surprise them with a golden, fish-shaped, red-bean-stuffed masterpiece the second they walked in the door.
She had the mold pan that she secretly bought. She had the sweet rice flour, the eggs, the milk, the little can of red beans she'd hunted down at the grocery shop three subway stops away because, of course, it was sold out in her area. She had, arguably, too much confidence.
The first batch went into the pan looking like batter. It came out looking like a war crime.

Summary
every year on August 21st she'd do the one single thing she did for herself to— she wouldn't call it celebrate exactly, but would use it for lack of a better word. She'd go to the nearest store the day before, buy a single cupcake, usually the saddest-looking one because it just felt right, and a single cheap candle.
When the clock struck midnight, as she'd sit alone in the kitchen aisle of their ginormous penthouse, she'd light up the candle, sink it into the cupcake and watch the flame dance with the light breeze that came from whichever window they had forgotten to close before bed.
Watching the beautiful dance of orange and yellow and blue always made her space out a little, chin propped on her folded arms resting atop the table. In these moments, she'd let herself imagine what it must feel to be celebrated — not as an obligation but because there was someone out there happy that she was alive.

"Mira?" Her voice was so small. The only thing worse than a still Zoey was a quiet Zoey. "Do you think Rumi is hurting herself?"
It felt like Mira had been hit with a cattle prod to her ribs. She spun to face Zoey, squaring her shoulders and a breath away from defending Rumi from such accusations.
"I always said she was shy..." Zoey trailed off. "But now I'm not sure anymore. It's been months since the last time I saw her in short sleeves."
Relegated to her failures, Mira dug her nails into the flesh of her hand. She sunk down to the bench, falling into the black hole that her heart was being sucked down. "I don't know."
Based off the wonderful comics of @andry-di on Tumblr, following Zoey and Mira who fear that the actions Rumi takes to cover her patterns are her way of covering self-harm marks.

“Hey, no. Don’t ever say that. Ever. Okay? Whatever happens, we’re here for you. I’m here for you.” Mira said, her voice firm. “How about while I go get the te– test, you stay with Zoey?”
“I can’t tell her, Mira. I can’t. I can’t, I can’t–”
Mira could see the spiral starting again, “Okay, then don’t. You don’t need to tell her. She’ll just be glad to keep you company while you’re upset. I won’t tell her, and you don’t have to tell her. It’s your choice, Rumi. All of this is your choice.”
In the wake of the Idol Awards, Rumi finds herself in an impossible situation. Luckily, Mira and Zoey will always be there for her.

Zoey bounded into the room. "Mir! Mira, help!"
She yelped as Rumi's body collided into hers, the weretiger pressing her face down onto the large mattress. Rumi's whole body trembled in excitement as the weretiger's head dipped down to bite the side of her prey's neck. Zoey gave a sharp yelp as she struggled under the pin, but Rumi ignored it as she held her jaw still.
Soon enough, her prey's struggles stopped as Zoey panted into the mattress, accepting her defeat. Pride washed through Rumi's chest, and she purred at her prey's submission.
A low whistle coming from the top of the bed made her growl, teeth still pressed against her prey's neck.
"Wow, what did you do to bring out her tiger, Zoe?"
The body beneath her wheezed out a laugh. "Threw my underwear at her."
"Your underwear."

Rumi simply whined in response, too far gone for words.

Rumi's hips jerked, and she came without warning. Mira quickly grabbed the third cup, aiming the opening toward Rumi's tip. Heat pooled low in her belly as drops of Rumi's seed spilled onto her fingers, leaving burning trails over her skin. Mira's center throbbed. She closed her eyes and took a steadying breath.
Easy now, Mira. Just do your work.
Without warning, Rumi leaned forward, grabbing Mira's face and pulling her in.
"Wait—"
"You got your samples."
"Rumi—?"
"I want what was promised."
Sharp teeth nipped at her neck before being soothed by a kiss.
"I want you."
Mira makes a deal with her subject, mermaid Rumi, to collect samples. She ends up studying Rumi's mating behaviors up close and personal.

The client hadn’t really requested anything at all; their emails had been almost overly polite, if not jarringly formal, and had selected only the most vanilla options on the questionnaire she provided. Certainly a far cry from the standard practices of her usual clientele, but this one had paid upfront and picked this expensive hotel, and Mira’s fees are dear enough on their own that she had been coloured intrigued.
Mira takes a left down the hallway after leaving the elevator and finds herself at the door to the room. She doesn’t steel herself—doesn’t need to. She can handle anything. Has handled most things. Mira swipes the keycard and lets herself in.
The person sitting on the bed is probably the last thing she expects.
In which Mira is a professional, Rumi is socially inept, and Zoey is also there. Let's hope nobody catches feelings.
