The first time Henry sees it happen, he knows instantly that it is not the first time it has ever happened. They’re sitting in the living room of the brownstone, the two of them surrounded by their favorite people in the world, a night of board games long abandoned in favor of mocking the eighth season of Game of Thrones.
“God, don’t you have an off switch?” June groans, laughing as she chucks a piece of popcorn in Alex’s direction while he rambles passionately about the international legal implications of the Red Wedding. Nora cackles. “Whatever you do to thank Henry for putting up with you, it’s not nearly enough. Jesus, I can’t believe he put a ring on your loud mouth.”
Or: Alex is fine. Really, he’s fine — he just wants Henry to stay, even if Alex is too much. Henry just wants his husband back.

Shit.
Alex froze for half a second before forcing a chuckle. “What?”
Henry’s jaw tightened, his gaze sharp now, assessing. “You look like hell,” he said bluntly, voice dropping into something firm. “When was the last time you slept?"
Alex rolled his eyes, trying for an easy smirk. “Jesus, Henry, thanks for the compliment.”
Henry didn’t even blink. “Alexander.”
The use of his full name sent a shiver down Alex’s spine, and he suddenly felt very, very seen. He fought the instinct to look away, to deflect, to play it off, but Henry wasn’t letting up
“Answer me.”
Alex swallowed hard. “I’ve been sleeping,” he said, lifting a shoulder. “Just, you know, finals season. Busy."
Henry’s gaze darkened. “That wasn’t an answer. Try again."
Alex felt his throat tighten. He could talk his way out of a press scandal, he could debate foreign policy in front of a crowd, but this—this level of scrutiny, from Henry of all people—made him feel exposed in a way he wasn’t prepared for.
“I dunno, A couple hours here and there. Not a big deal.”(Henry has to go to England for 3 full weeks, right in the middle of finals season and election campaigning: Alex doesn't take it well)

Summary
It’s been nearly two years since the leak of the so-called Waterloo Letters and Alex and Henry are doing their best to live their lives on their own terms. But between the pressures of American politics, their increasing frustration with the Palace along with the harassment of the British tabloids and strangers who hate them for no reason, it feels like it’s impossible for them to move forward.
