Summary
Freshman year kicks off with high hopes when best friends Skizz and Impulse land ensemble roles in their high school’s chaotic production of Shrek the Musical. Together, they dive headfirst into tech days, costume mishaps, and swamp-themed nonsense—until Impulse gets promoted to a featured part and doesn’t tell Skizz first.
What starts as harmless jealousy quickly spirals into full-on backstage rivalry, complete with passive-aggressive dance battles, silent treatment during warm-ups, and theatrical sabotage that makes the assistant stage manager Etho seriously reconsider his life choices. With Joel dropping moss from the fly loft, Cleo flashing lights at people mid-fight, and Xisuma calmly steering the ship as director, the drama offstage rivals anything happening under the spotlight.
But during tech week, a meltdown leads to a much-needed confrontation—and maybe something a little more tender than either of them expected. As the curtain rises on closing night, the only question left is: will the Swamp Squad go out fighting… or holding hands?

Etho caught him instantly, letting Joel curl into his hoodie like a tired toddler trying so hard not to cry.
“I gotcha,” Etho murmured. “You’re okay. You’re safe. It’s okay to feel fuzzy. Wanna come down all the way with me?”
Joel nodded into his shoulder.
Doc stood and gave a quiet thumbs-up. “I’ll stay with Tango and Zooma. You two do what you need.”
Tango waved. “I made Joel a pillow fort!”
Zooma clapped sleepily from inside it, paci still in, slime charm wiggling.

Summary
Joel pushes himself too hard during a big Hermitcraft event, desperate to prove himself after a few mocking comments hit a little too close. He wins—but instead of feeling triumphant, he crashes hard. When Lizzie finds him post-event, panicking and nonverbal, she calls Etho for backup. Joel tries to insist he’s fine, but eventually breaks down and regresses fully in their arms.

Joel hiccupped. “I was trying to be big.”
“I know. And you’re allowed to try. But it’s also okay to stop trying. Especially when it hurts.”
He hesitated.
Joel didn’t respond, just clutched the edge of the blanket tighter.
“Can I sit with you?” Etho asked.
Joel nodded.
Etho climbed up carefully and let Joel curl into his side. Joel trembled for a moment, but then burrowed closer, hiding his face in Etho’s hoodie.
“You’re not a joke,” Etho said softly. “You’re Joel. And you won. And even if you hadn’t, you’d still be amazing. Because none of that stuff makes you more or less worthy of being little or needing care. Tough guys fall too.”
