The box is nondescript, identical to all the other storage boxes except for the blunt ‘Life-Ending Measures’ label printed across the top. Inside are three smaller boxes, each with names engraved into the metal.

The last one catches Grace off-guard. He’s expecting it to belong to DuBois, but DuBois’ chosen method had been nitrogen poisoning, and all the nitrogen had been stored with the rest of the chemical resources in the lab. Grace’s access to it had been the only reason he was able to wipe out both Taumoeba leaks in time.
DuBois wouldn’t have needed anything else; no final lethal dose like Ilyukhina or bullets like Yáo.
But there are three boxes here. And on the third, etched in neat letters, is Grace.

“Alright, Cal,” I tell the little orange Eridian. “Remind me again—what happens at the end of the month?”
Cal wiggles in place. “Halloween! The last day is Halloween!”
“Right!” I turn my back to the class just for a moment to gather up a stack of papers, embossed so that the text on them is readable.
The writing is all in Eridian, and the paper itself is something that the biodome team helped develop: a miraculous material that can withstand both my environment and Erid’s. If I was still on Earth, it would be one of the most incredible feats of the century—aside from everything we accomplished on Project Hail Mary—and yet, most of it is shipped here, to my cozy little seaside classroom. It’s very important for things like homework.
Or field trip permission slips.
