Rain had remembered once, as a kid, that she'd dropped an apple under her bed. At the time, it hadn't been important. She'd stashed a mental note to grab it later as she'd gone on to do something else. That mental note must've gotten lost somewhere, because Rain remembered finding the apple again.
She remembered the smell more than anything. She'd gone on a vacation with a relative and came back to a rancid scent that made her regret it. Even years later, Rain remembered that smell. She remembered the faint undertone of sweetness that had once been there drowned by the putrid scent of something sour, so strong up close that she could barely breathe as she removed the offending fruit from its hiding place.
It had confused her how something so lovely could turn so spoiled. -

Kanako’s memory of the funeral was already fading, and she hated it. She’d felt the entire time like she was in a daze, not properly even hurting like she knew she should’ve been, like everyone around her was. People were supposed to cry at funerals, and some were. She’d seen the glassy-eyed look in Uncle Star’s eyes, even if he’d managed to keep his composure. Frustratingly, Kanako couldn’t exactly say she was happy. Earlier, it had felt like the world had ended entirely. Since the funeral, without her mother, it felt like it had stopped.

It felt right, though. Clover looked so unbearably tired and weary that she couldn’t bring herself to make her voice any firmer. It seemed to have worked, the human’s hold slowly loosening, trudging towards the stairs.
Ceroba waited. She watched them go, breathing a sigh of relief as their footsteps faded.
And then she turned, head whipping around. Starlo shrank back, eyes widening.
“Kitchen. Now.”
