“Mad?” Viktor bites out, voice alight with the hint of the mania fluttering in his chest like a bird. “Evil? A violation of their precious Ethos?”
“Dead. They told me you were dead.”
After the bomb hits, everything changes. The Machine Herald has been fighting The Defender of Tomorrow for months as the Piltover-Zaun war rages on. Viktor has fully accepted that they are doomed to be on opposite sides in this war, but when his mask comes off during combat, he realizes he may have miscalculated Jayce's motivations.

“Sometimes you need to just make a choice, and say -” Jayce’s voice was starting to shake as he scurried over the crowd with sad eyes and somehow, somehow – his eyes met Viktor’s. Jayce’s expression froze, dark gaze darting over Viktor’s similarly frozen face, warm eyes softening.
“Yes,” Jayce whispered. “I will marry you.”
Jayce Talis pointed to the crowd, somewhere past Viktor. Viktor turned his head to see who it was the singer was pointing to, before looking back to see who Jayce was looking at when no one moved.
Wait, was he not pointing past Viktor….wait…not past Viktor…pointing at Viktor?
Jayce held out his hand once Viktor turned his head back and yes, those eyes were most certainly stuck on Viktor. “Yes, you.”Or when it is revealed mere moments before his wedding that the woman Jayce loves is marrying him as an "investment" and not out of love, Jayce makes a choice - he agrees to marry a complete stranger while on stage.

Jayce has always craved attention.
Viktor hates it.
Well, no—what he hates is that Jayce isn’t seeking *his* attention. He’s seeking Mel Medarda’s. And Viktor can’t stand it. Watching Jayce lap up every compliment, every flirtatious glance from her, while Viktor quietly suffers in the background, stirs something bitter inside him. So, he pulls away, spending more time with others, trying to force himself to care less.
But Jayce notices, because of course he notices.
He notices Viktor with Sky, and suddenly the only person he wants attention from is Viktor.

Before he can stop himself, he picks up the phone. Every ring seems to last for eternity. Please, he thinks, be there, pick up, don’t be dead, don’t be gone…
“Viktor?”
His heart jumps. Silco’s voice is muffled, sleep-thick, but oh so achingly familiar. He had not realised until now just how much he missed it.
“You do realise it is 2 o’clock in the morning?”
He tries to speak but no words come out. The guilt, perhaps, has stolen them.
“Has something happened?”
“Papa,” he finally whispers. “Papa. Papa.” And then all of a sudden he is bawling his eyes out, horrible, heaving gasps and sobs torn from his throat, wracking his thin frame, and distantly he is embarrassed, but he cannot seem to make himself stop.
Worn down by the crushing weight of (not actually) unrequited love, workplace disputes, past trauma, and the existential dread that comes with being an overachiever in your twenties, Viktor finally breaks. Papa Silco comes to pick up the pieces.
Returning to his childhood home in Zaun for a long-overdue rest, Viktor must reckon with his past, his future, and the terrifying prospect of allowing himself to be loved and cared for.
