Grace is acting strange, and Eva Stratt can't for the life of her figure out why. She's usually very good at figuring out why people did the things that they do - it was one of the reasons she was put in charge of the Petrova Problem in the first place - and Grace is usually especially easy to read. Simon is silent as Rocky tediously dries his face. Even when it presses the cloth to the scarred skin of his other cheek, there is no pain. The fibers of the cloth snag on a scab, but Rocky is so careful as it pulls away. His heart aches. Not in the gripped-by-fear way. After the SM-13 explodes with him inside, he opens his eyes to find out he's on the Savior Grace, a ship owned by an alien species that call themselves eridians. The eridians treat him well and he can't understand what they could possibly want from him. He knows repayment is due.

Ryland Grace knew he wasn’t a typical alpha. He wasn’t imposing, aggressive (with a couple exceptions proving the rule, he supposed) or dominant in his relationships (especially, ahem, the intimate ones). Sure, he did get protective of people he cared about, his kids especially, but not to a degree as great as any textbook alpha would.
So he knew it for a fact – Ryland Grace was not a typical alpha.
And then Simon came along and turned everything Ryland thought he knew about himself upside down.
That was what was going through Ryland’s mind as he pinned an Eridian to the ground, a deep, guttural growl spilling out over his lips as he bared his teeth, standing between the Eridian and Simon, who was huddling in on himself a few feet away, breathing heavily in distress.
Which only served to make Ryland’s grip on the Eridian tighter.
