There’s another cough. It’s louder this time, and deeper still, and Geralt turns his head, trying to peer into the rubble. He opens his mouth, but Jaskier’s name sticks in his throat, his tongue still coated with dust. Grit crunches between his molars as he swallows.
“J’sk’r?”
He hears the shifting of rocks, and the scratch of silk against craggy stone. It’s quickly followed by a mumbled groan of pain. The noise is weak, but so oddly close that Geralt flinches at the sound. Without thinking, he stretches his hand out, the sleeve of his tunic scraping along the floor until his fingertips brush against warm flesh.
“Jaskier?” he tries again, more urgently.

Geralt is a long haul truck driver. With long stretches on the road away from his family, and with no one to keep him company but his loyal dog Roach, he has to brave most of his life completely alone. Then one day, just as he is passing the city of Oxenfurt, he turns on the radio and hears a voice.

During those hours, Jaskier's voice fills Geralt's lonely cabin. It melds with the noises of the truck and the road and the night, imbuing the sounds of his life with longing and beauty. It is the highlight of every trip.
The rain patters, the gears shift, Roach snores, and Jaskier laughs self-deprecatingly when he messes up a note. His voice vibrates and sparkles and Geralt takes it to his chest and holds it. When the static begins to break in, he feels regret. He feels loss.
When he returns that way, Geralt counts the miles until he's back in range of the station. When he catches sight of the little green mile marker that says twenty-six, he knows it is time to turn the dial. That is when Jaskier's voice, bright and warm, fills his life again with its comfort.

“I’m in love," Geralt said in a slurred, mad rush, the words blending into one another. If there was a crack in Jaskier’s chest before, now it was a cavern: a deep, treacherous gap that spanned miles, uncaring and empty, ready to accept a willingly flung body.
Geralt comes home drunk and melancholy after a night out with his brothers. Jaskier asks what’s wrong - and immediately regrets it when Geralt confesses that his mood has been brought about by his unrequited love for a friend.

Jaskier pushed himself up in bed, the sleep that was clouding his brain rapidly dissipating.
“Geralt, what are you talking about? Are you feeling okay? What’s wrong?”instead of a peaceful winter at kaer morhen, where the wolves (plus a bard, a witch, and a lion cub) can relax, geralt wakes up with no memory of jaskier, his bard, his companion, and most importantly, his lover.

Witchers have slow heartbeats and slow blood flow, makes it a lot more difficult to bleed out in battle. But there is another consequence of this mutation - it takes a long time for a witcher to get hard and orgasm during sex. They compensate with a particular potion, and Geralt has rather failed to mention this to Jaskier for the two years they have been together. Until he runs out of the potion when they are practically on vacation and has to explain it to Jaskier.
Jaskier is very intrigued just how long it will take without the potion to make Geralt feel good.
