The nameless little girl did not remember the stranger who called her daughter, nor did she recognize the name Ivonne. But as the man smiled down at her and removed his own cloak to wrap around her shoulders she found that she didn’t much care. Her memories would return one day she thought. For now she would take her father’s surety as the definite that it was and allow him to bring her home.
Or: Penelope's in-game character bio in volume one says that she was originally a nameless peasant girl before being adopted and to me that can only mean one thing.

What started out as a joke quickly turned into something more devastating.
