Louis had never picked up the extroversion nor the showmanship needed for bartending, moving between customers nearly mechanically and purposefully evading most of the conversations others tried to start with him as he made their orders, especially if they approached him flirtatiously.
It wasn't that he was ashamed of his sexuality, he had believed in loving thy neighbor before he had first heard the phrase in church as a young child and he had clung to that idea fervently even as he shed God from his life in his late teens. His hesitation often came from a place of cautiousness because, while this world was fast opening its eyes to the identities that had been ignored or shunned generations earlier, it was still a danger to be an openly gay Black man in any part of the South.
Despite this, he found himself drawn to what could only be described as a presence in the bar that night.
Or, Louis is a human bar owner trying his best to be normal about the pretty blond man in his bar, but it's impossible to avoid. They were always meant to find each other, even in different bodies, different times.
