“Everything okay?” Oliver asks and Josh nods as he sits down beside him.
“Yeah, just…my dad died.”
“Oh my god,” Dana says.
“Dr. Nichols, I’m so sorry,” Katie adds.
“Josh,” Oliver says softly as he lays his hand on Josh’s arm.
Josh forces a smile then clears his throat. “Anyway,” he says brightly, “mine is the volleyball scene in Top Gun. Cliche, I know, but I saw it a few years after it came out with a bunch of my friends who wanted to watch it for the action and Kelly McGillis but I enjoyed it for very different reasons.”
Oliver squeezes his arm. Katie smiles tightly. Dana pulls a bottle of Celexa out of her bag and shakes a pill into her palm.

Summary
Josh takes his time to adjust the back of each cap so it fits each individual child, all while a boy with shockingly red hair talks a mile a minute beside him. Whatever story he’s telling it must be incredibly detailed because he makes big, broad gestures with his hands and rocks forward on his toes, leaning into Josh’s space like he’s making sure he’s listening. Josh smiles and nods and asks questions in return that send the boy off into another tangent which makes Josh smile even wider.
If it were anyone else, Oliver would call it heartwarming. Adorable. Sweet.
But it’s Dr. Nichols, who didn’t care that Hannah might lose her own children. Who tried to kick him off her case. Who yelled at him in the parking lot of a dive bar just because he wanted to give Wyatt a chance to make things right with his own daughter.
So Oliver won’t call it any of those things. He won’t call it anything at all. And he absolutely won’t acknowledge the way it suddenly kick-starts the ticking of his biological clock.

It had only been an idle thought, no different than any number of easy, directionless musings of the sort that often came over the two of them on mornings like this one, when no one had a shift to go to for at least thirty-six hours. Robby didn’t mean anything by it. But he regretted the words the instant they left his mouth, even before he saw the incredulous grin slide over Jack’s face.

Oliver paused, entirely frozen. He wasn’t always the best at reading signals, and he’d made his share of embarrassing mistakes in the past. But he’d been flirting with Nichols, first unconsciously and then very, very deliberately, and he was almost certain Nichols had been flirting back.
Oliver took a moment to gather his courage, then spoke.
“Why don’t you drive me to your place instead?”
