ㅤㅤㅤ“What are you playing?” Hiccup asked, curling his legs beneath him.
ㅤㅤㅤJack hesitated. There were songs he knew by heart, shaped by living rooms and voices that no longer reached him across the distance of far away countries—songs he had played for Emma in El Calafate, brotherly and ridiculously, so stupid in their lyrics or performance that she laughed and begged him to stop; songs he had piped for his mother, quieter still, when the evenings stretched long and yellowed by losses, stained with love left with nowhere to go. He glanced at Hiccup again.
ㅤㅤㅤ“Algo contigo,” Jack answered.
ㅤㅤㅤRapunzel’s smile flickered, a glimpse of recognition in the way she said, all too brief and all too precious: “I’ll follow.”
ㅤㅤㅤHe wondered if she knew this would be a confession of love to a boy who might never know how much he was loved.

Summary
It's the first winter after Pitch's defeat. Jack is happy, he's not alone anymore, and his memories are gradually returning. But when a treasure hunt gone wrong puts Jack and Jamie in danger, flinging them through time and space, they find themselves on an island neither of them have heard of before. Jack's first priority is to get Jamie home safe, but Berk's inhabitants - human and otherwise - are certainly not making it easy.
Knowing they will leave Berk and the Vikings behind as soon as they know how to, Jack is not going to risk the pain of growing close to any of these people (or dragons, for that matter). But Hiccup Horrendous Haddock, wearing his heart on his sleeve, doesn't seem to want to take the hint.

Bitty wants to pull Jack in by the collar of his shirt and kiss him right here, right now. Instead, he says, “I don’t get it. Why I’m supposed to hate you, I mean.”
Jack shrugs. “Teams like having a common enemy. It bonds them, I think,” he says. And then, so quietly Bitty almost doesn’t hear it, “For what it’s worth, I’m not doing a very good job hating you either.”
Or: After the overdose, Jack traded in his hockey stick for a lacrosse stick. This proves to be very inconvenient for Bitty's budding crush on him.
