His phone in his pocket began to vibrate, regular buzzing pulses against his side indicating a call. One side of Maruki’s smile quirked up a little as Goro froze
“Aren’t you going to answer that?”
Goro’s free hand moved of its own accord, shaking as he reached into his pocket and pulled out his phone. He kept his head held high and facing Maruki, glancing down while keeping the phone low, as though he were trying to sneak a look at the screen during class.
He saw the notification accompanying the call, and he threw the phone like a spider had crawled on his hand. He staggered backward as it clattered to the concrete ground with the screen facing upright, the words on the screen burning into his retinas and his brain and his heart.
Just one word, one simple little word on the caller ID.
Mom.
