When Button House is being fixed for a few days, the troops of Button House get to camp out in the grounds for a few days.
Havers and Captain end up sharing a tent and Captain struggles to contain his feelings, unknowing that his Lieutenant is struggling just as much as he is.i don't own the characters or anything :)

There’s another film crew at Button House, and this time they’re filming a 1930s/40s piece about the English war effort. And they’ve brought period vehicles— one of which, it just so happens, contains the ghost of a very important Lieutenant.

He had spent lifetimes trying to forget what this felt like, this particular brand of hope. It was blinding, all-consuming, exciting, dangerous. It made him confront things he wished would stay buried, made him latch onto foolish ideas— scenarios where Havers returned to Button House through some contrived means. They all began something like this, and then, and then, and then.

Somewhere on the first floor of the house, only the slightest sliver of candlelight could be seen through the thick curtains. The Jerries hadn’t been spotted flying over England for a few days now, and there were no new reports saying that they would. Though one could of course never be sure of anything when it came to the Germans these days. And although the Captain was well aware that if he had been any other soldier under his own command, he would have reprimanded himself for taking such an unnecessary risk at once, he found himself to be in a particular mood tonight where, frankly, he couldn’t bring himself to.

There is more than one war being fought from Button House. One is obviously against Germany and their allies. The other is within the mind of one Lieutenant Havers.

Sinning?Well no, sin isn’t the right word. He thinks of it more as a bad, unhealthy habit. Doesn’t have much truck with chaps carrying on like that with women, either. War’s made everyone think there’s no tomorrow and they don’t have to hold to any sort of standard.
He can break that habit easily enough. Just needs a little discipline.
If I live, he says again. I’ll stop if I live.-------
The Captain has made several bargains with God. They don't have a habit of working in his favour.
