Summary
Myth says Hermes lulled Argus Panoptes to sleep, then killed him without a fight.
Myth is wrong.
Argus wakes. He gets one good hit in before Hermes ends him for it, and gods don’t bleed for nothing. When Hermes washes the ichor from his skin at Trikrena, the spring where the nymphs first bathed him, something in the water answers back.
Somewhere else, Luke is dying with a Titan screaming inside his skull.

Summary
In the end, it’s simple. All it takes is one quick, clean swing of his sword and it’s over. The sarcophagus disintegrates, red-gold dust crumbling around him, seeping into the floor of the Labyrinth.
He runs as the room shakes in his former master’s impotent rage. The floor cracks beneath him, the walls tip forward, and the ceiling shakes, plaster raining down like ash. He breathes in a mouthful of that red dust, but he doesn’t have time to retch. He runs like he did when he was seven and his mom was reaching for him, all green-sick eyes and hissed poison, her hands twisting into claws, like he did when he was fourteen and the small weight of Annabeth in his arms was the only thing keeping him from looking back to where Thalia fell, like he did when he was seventeen and a dragon was looking to make a meal of him.
He makes it out of the room right before it collapses. Of course he does. Luke’s always been good at running.

Summary
The pull of kinship reignites in Luke’s chest. A surge of protectiveness blossoms within as he looks upon the kind woman and innocent child.
He can’t. Can’t allow it. Can’t let them follow the same path. A loving mother treated as an expendable tool. Left either to waste away above or lie dead underground. A child so young. Not understanding of the light that longs to ensnare him. Of the shadows that desire to consume him whole.
Luke already lost his family once at the hand of divine beasts, so in this he allows himself a shred of selfishness in the hopes it’ll breed salvation. One last shot at family kindled from the concerned gaze of Sally Jackson.
He hopes it’ll finally be enough.
