    Summary

Ilya knows firsthand that the world isn’t comfortable. It’s loud, bright, demanding, a harsh place in direct opposition to everything he’s recently learned about autism.

Is it so wrong that he wants Shane to feel safe here? To carve out a space where, even if only for a few hours, he doesn’t have to grin and bear anything? He can just be?

Or: Ilya Rozanov has a lot of good ideas. Telling his fuck buddy that he should consider getting an autism diagnosis isn’t one of them.

Shane is traded to Boston during the hookup era, and his attempts to act normal and professional around Rozanov are a little too successful: fans start shipping him with Marleau, instead.

    Summary

Shane (to himself): This is great. I'm going to get a good grade in friends with benefits, something that is both normal to want and possible to achieve,

    Or:

When Shane sticks it out at Ilya's house, and the tuna meltdown doesn't happen, he still walks away confused about what Ilya actually WANTS from him. When an opportunity presents itself in the form of Rose Landry and a very thorough PR relationship contract, Shane decides to take advantage of it to show Ilya that he can be a totally chill and normal friend with benefits, and definitely isn't too attached.

Spot on characterization even though it’s AU. This is exactly what’s actually happening in the book/show even though fanon often reduces the tuna melt panic as Shane’s gay panic, which doesn’t ring true to me. There’s no way Shane doesn’t know. But, knowing and accepting that there’s never going to be a woman that rescues the white picket fence and 2.5 kids he thinks his mother wants for him. In order to be a model minority, which she explicitly pressures him to do. Because he conceptualizes gayness as a flaw. Not to mention how much he doesn't want to have another reason to other him from everybody else in the locker room. He’s already not white, not neurotypical, but clearly at a much higher level of talent than everyone around him. As much as he takes pride in his exceptional talent, the flip side is he knows average white hockey bro number 4 resents him for it. He has enough to deal with without reckoning with the 100% certainty that the perfect wife for him will never exist.

Also, also, this is a 19 yo dude that has a dildo at home before Ilya ever even talks about fucking him. He knows, ok?

“If a crystal ball could tell you the truth about yourself, your life, the future or anything else, what would you want to know?” Quickly, Ilya adds, “Don’t say that you want to know if you win the Cup.”

“Why not? What if that’s my answer?”

“Is so boring, Hollander. Of course you want to know this. But Ilya Rozanov and Boston Raiders exist in this world, so crystal ball says, so sad, but no.”

“Fuck off. What are these questions even for, anyway? Are you interviewing me for something? Wouldn’t you have to, like, tell me if you were?”

Ilya is quick to assure Hollander before his paranoia takes him right out of this phone call. “It is not for interview, Hollander. I am just wondering. Answer the question.”

“And I can’t say that I would want to know whether I win the Cup.”

    “Yes, other than that.”

“I guess… I guess I would want to know, like, am I happy?”

Ilya reads an article about 36 questions that are supposed to make people fall in love. He decides to ask Shane.

Lovely, especially the ending. So much emotional depth even though this isn’t terribly long.

    Summary

“Ilya, what are we gonna do?” Shane says.

Ilya finishes whatever he has been doing on his phone, and tosses it gently to the bed beside him. He crosses the room to Shane, stands in front of him, squeezes into his shoulders with his big hands, rubbing them like he means to warm them up.

“Looks like we will have a little vacation,” he says, with a big obnoxious grin.

Boston and Montreal are sent to Paris to play against each other in an exhibition series in January 2017. Ilya and Shane decide to stay in Paris for one more night. Just one more night, so they can talk. Maybe finally understand each other.

They aren't expecting a volcano to erupt in Iceland and close all the airspace in Europe, leaving them stranded there. Together.
