Center stage, Jungkook was halfway through belting his second “Love you so bad” when he heard it—an abrupt and collective gasp from the audience that washed over the entirety of the venue.
The strange reaction from the crowd was off-putting, but he didn’t fully understand what had elicited it until he took a few steps backwards, following through with the routine’s choreography and allowing for Jimin to claim his spot at the front of the formation so he could sing the next part of the chorus.
Only, Jimin never came.
It didn’t take long for the youngest group member to discover why. To his complete shock and utter horror, Jungkook’s eyes stumbled upon the sight of said bandmate lying on his back, unmoving on the cold stage floor.
Arms splayed out haphazardly. Eyes closed shut.
Motionless.
Or: Jimin collapses mid-performance, and in the chaos of the aftermath, Jungkook is forced to confront something he’s always tried to suppress: the possibility that he might care for one of his bandmates in a different way than the rest.

For Park Jimin, the end of the year always came with a certain kind of exhaustion - one that settled into the deepest depths of his body. It threaded through his nervous system, weaving through his muscles and overloading his brain until the only thing he could do was mindlessly lie in bed, too drained to even attempt to sleep. No matter how hard he performed on stage, whirling around under the blazing lights, it never went away. He never let it show, covering up the cracks in his façade before they had a chance to ruin the image he had carefully built for himself, for the fans, for his parents. Yet Jeon Jungkook saw through it all, and that brought something upon him that he refused to name. He was a constant wildcard in Jimin's life, the light at the end of the tunnel. Jimin hated it. It wasn't worth it. But at the same time, he craved it. He needed it.
But he never saw it coming - the sharp crack, the blazing agony that came on without warning. One little thing that changed everything, throwing him so far off of his axis until he couldn't see the light at the end of the tunnel.
Yet Jeon Jungkook remained. And Jimin wasn't sure how he was going to make it through.

Jimin’s eyes opened, though he kept his face turned toward the nightstand. “Hm?”
Jeongguk hesitated long enough that Jimin felt the next breath against the sensitive skin below his ear. His voice was quieter when he continued, low and almost embarrassed in the darkness.
“My energy... it’s still here.”
The admission sent a small shiver down Jimin’s back. He hoped Jeongguk mistook it for the air conditioning.
Or: Everyone assumes Jeongguk disappears into the gym after every concert because he’s incapable of sitting still. Jimin believes it too, until Jeongguk lets slip that the restless energy keeping him awake has far more to do with Jimin than any lingering adrenaline. After that, Jimin can’t stop wondering what might happen if Jeongguk redirected all that energy toward... him instead. The only problem is that, after nearly ten years together, he has somehow forgotten how to communicate that to his own boyfriend.

Jeon Jungkook has orbited Park Jimin like a faithful planet for his entire life. He's never felt the need to stray away, not when Jimin has taught him what real devotion is. But when Jimin feels the need to put unnecessary distance between them, he has no choice but to reverse their roles — just so that he can pull him back with the inescapable force of a gravitational pull.
Or: in which Jungkook manages to rope Jimin into filming a new season for their show for completely innocent, non-selfish reasons, and Jimin is so busy repressing over a decade worth of feelings that he wouldn't know reciprocation if it hit him in the face with a baseball bat.

Jimin's throat moves as he swallows. "We're not complicated."
"We're not not complicated."
A ghost of a smile crosses Jimin's face. "That's the most Jeongguk thing you've ever said."
"Is that bad?"
"No." Jimin's voice is soft. "It's just you."
In which Jimin and Jeongguk spend fifteen years orbiting each other until they finally stop running. But the distance between them never quite closes because no matter how many times they drift apart, they always, always find their way back.

Summary
He always feels a bit like they’re stuck in a race where Jungkook is faster than him. Where he’s miles ahead and unreachable in a way that’s unfathomable. Where Jimin is struggling to keep up and is forever destined to stare at Jungkook’s back, a hand perpetually extended to try and reach for him.
Jimin doesn’t want to surpass Jungkook. He just wants to run alongside him. As an equal, as a friend, as a partner. Is that truly so much to ask for?
Or: Following the end of their Vietnam trip, Jimin stumbles across a video compilation of the rocky relationship he had with Jungkook at the very beginning of their debut years. Slapped with a blast from the past and suddenly drowning in insecurities he thought he'd long suppressed, he decides that slowly pulling away from Jungkook is the only right thing to do.
Jungkook, however—a redeemed man, a pining expert, and someone with an extremely low tolerance for any kind of space between them—has much to say about it.
