    It had felt weirdly targeted at the time, but Steph had never asked any of the others if they’d gotten the same talk. She’d had the sneaking suspicion she’d leave the conversation offended, and figured she’d cut out the middle man.

    Right then, in that moment, holding a smoking cube of dubious origin and staring at a skyline she only vaguely recognized from those wistful pictures of Gotham Before that rich people liked to hang up like fine art, Stephanie had to concede that Bruce had maybe, possibly, been onto something.

    “Oh, fuck me,” she said to empty air.

    Stephanie Brown ends up in 1967. Bruce Wayne has been Batman for a year. She doesn't know if he's making it to year three, mainly because she might strangle him first.

    Peter Parker may have been dropped in some Jersey-based hellscape thanks to Dr Strange’s spell, but he was making it work. He was. Okay, reliving his teen years wasn’t on his bingo card, nor was being homeless, but he wasn't homeless for long! He’s been crashing with one of the local heroes. It’s some guy called Red Hood who seems to terrify everyone, which personally he thinks is silly, because this dork is clearly an absolute softy. Despite having the intelligence of an 18 year old tech genius in the body of a homeless 13 year old, and, oh yeah, the whole spider thing, Peter thinks he’s been doing a stellar job of being your run-of-the-mill average homeless teenager.

     
    Jason Todd, on the other hand, is about to have an aneurism. There is a homeless child with his name, Dick's face and Tim's intelligence sleeping in his safe-house. They don’t know where he came from, or how he fights as easy as breathing. He just knows that he’s somehow responsible for this mess now.

     Jesus fucking christ.

    She has died in Gotham enough times to write a book on “101 creative ways to die” and develop an opinion on game balance—whoever designed this hell-broken death-trap disguised as a city deserves jail. Preferably in Arkham. Preferably right between Joker and Riddler.

    So when she finally rolled a miracle jackpot account—Bruce Wayne’s daughter—she does the only sensible thing every true hard-core gamer would do: panic and drop an irresponsible amount of money on a premium trait for better survivability…only to be hit with the worst unlock prerequisite she has ever seen—namely getting the World’s Finest to fall in love on schedule.

    Now she has a rare build, a ticking origin-story deadline, and two stubborn not-yet-legendary future parents who are somehow both intelligent yet completely, impossibly useless at following obvious romantic instructions.

    …It really would be easier if Batman was being less Batman about it.

    Well, Claire will just have to show them how extreme a Player can get to preserve her hard-won Kryptonian build. If she has to take matters into her own hands and personally drag this timeline to the altar by its ankles, then so be it.

    Trust me, the universe will cooperate.
