The Hogwarts Board of Governors has decided that the seventh and eighth years have had a difficult few years and would benefit from an experience which is enjoyable. Six weeks in the field, in pairs, at a site of mythological significance that needs their particular magic.
Harry and Hermione put their names down together. They are five months out of the war and sorer than either of them is letting on, and their respective Weasleys have gone on without them.
The rest of the cohort draw castles, shining lakes, a well that grants visions.
Harry and Hermione draw a bog. Two hundred and fifty acres of standing water in County Londonderry, its magic recorded as unquiet and in decline. Nobody can tell them what it needs, or what its name means, or why it wanted the pair of them.
A bog holds whatever is put into it.
