Marshall Robert Singer has one hand resting on his hip, the other gripping the discarded practice pole. Castiel thinks he looks tired. That said, with how the kaiju have been crawling with increasing frequency out of the Breach with every passing week and decimating the cities lining the Pacific, no one can blame the man for that.
Castiel knows there aren't enough Jaegers or Jaeger pilots left to defend the coastline against the monsters—but with his history, he's not getting back into harness. He's never joining his mind with anyone else's. Not again.
“Congratulations. You boys done dancing yet?” Singer demands, thumping the butt of the staff on the ground with blunt, percussive force. “We got work to do.”
“Work?” Castiel asks, frowning.
“Congratulations?” Dean finishes.
“Well, yeah.” The Marshall of North America's last battle-center looks back and forth between them, clearly questioning their intelligence. His lip curls just slightly under his beard—no doubt at their blank expressions. “You’re obviously Drift-compatible, ya idjits.”

You’ve heard things about Marie Schrader – hell, you’d have had to be living under a rock not to. After the fall of Heisenberg, and more recently, the lawyer who did his dirty work, the Albuquerque local news kept Marie’s face fresh in the zeitgeist. Everyone from the cashier at the 7-Eleven across from your apartment building to the goddamn mayor had respect for the woman. She was an average person whose life had been flipped upside down in an instant. In a way, it felt like the community knew her.
What you hadn’t expected was just how closely you’d be getting to know Marie.

Wordlessly, Steve fishes a Zippo from his pocket and reaches out to light Hank's cigarette. His eyes are narrowed, watching Hank almost suspiciously as he leans in, pressing the tip of his cigarette to the flame Steve sparks. It's a rush of nicotine when the paper burns, the earthy fog of tobacco filling the car and making the distance between them feel even smaller than it had become over the past minute.
Steve’s eyes are a deeper brown in the smoke.
Hank thinks he could stare into them all night.

Mickey Milkovich is basically content with his life. He tends bar at The Elk Horn, a bar and grill in Jackson Hole, Wyoming near the south entrance to Yellowstone National Park. He has a tiny one bedroom cabin in the woods he calls home and a nice girl he sees once or twice a week. He gets to chat with all the tourists who come in, an interesting menagerie of people from all walks of life. His life isn’t unhappy, but maybe just a little unfulfilling.
One day, a hiker walks in and takes a seat at the bar. Mickey is inexplicably drawn to this man and his beautiful copper hair, his even more beautiful face adorned with a short copper beard and deep green eyes. They strike up a pleasant conversation; the man orders a beer and a burger, leaves a large tip and waves a friendly goodbye. Mickey can’t get this man out of his head but like most patrons of The Elk Horn, he likely won’t step foot through the door again, having moved on in his travels.
But when the man returns the next day and again the day after that, Mickey can’t help but be intrigued. Why does he keep coming back? He’s definitely not a local and the food at the grill isn’t that good.
What follows has Mickey questioning his entire existence.

Mickey couldn’t help it. He just didn’t get it. Mickey hops on Ian’s shoulders and he stumbles a little bit, not quite falling but going down to a knee as Mickey laughs in his ear, loud and bright. “Come on, old man, you used to be able to do this for blocks!” He digs his heels in playfully, right below Ian’s ribs, and Ian bucks.
“Old man, huh?” Palm flat on the ground, Ian pushes himself to his feet and begins to run, not a sprint but faster than Mickey would have guessed, and he has to dig his fingers into Ian’s shoulders to keep from busting his ass on the pavement. Instead, he closes his eyes and feels just a little bit of breeze in his hair and lets Ian take him wherever he wants to go. When he opens his eyes again, they’re standing outside of the baseball field and Mickey’s heart jumps into his throat.
