Summary
Two weeks after the disaster of a conference that was meant to be his academic victory run and the successful start of the rest of his life as a molecular biologist, Ryland Grace escapes to one of Washington’s state parks. Zeff doesn’t outright take Sanji on a tour of the Cooking George, but he makes a point of showing off key spots when they take breaks from dominating the galley, and a bigger point of constantly touching the kid: a hand on top of his head or shoulder, nudging Sanji with his hip, periodically tapping him with his right foot. Usually that last one’s a precursor to somebody getting their ass kicked, but it just makes the boy smile every time, like Zeff’s red-stained boot means something special.
The whispers about cursed dreams are long gone by dinner, replaced by the crew wondering who exactly this kid is to their captain.
