Gem woke in her smock, lying stripped on Stygian stone and straw. She was freezing: that was the first thing she noticed. The world seeped in in splashes: she was stripped of her mantle, her hood, her soft gown, and lying on a floor of stone so cold it felt like ice. She couldn't feel her feet. She couldn't move her fingers. There was an awful ache in her bones, her brain, and her mouth tasted like rot and metal.
Fear was very far away from her: she was too tired to grasp it.
In which Gem is not rescued so promptly from Sausage's dungeon.

False would immediately recognize the person she sees in the mirror- not herself, no, of course not. When is anything about her? No, she saw the other one, the one with smile lines to go with her scars from a full life of fighting. The one with a full life to begin with.
False's clone- no, sister, remember?- is reflected in the ice.
She stares at it, tilts her head a tiny bit. Glances over her shoulder like that's where her sister actually is. Glances up at the jailbreak beacon shining brilliantly into the night sky.

She knows what he’ll say, he’d said it all yesterday/today, but if he suspected something was wrong… Gem throws her washcloth in the dirty laundry basket, watching it fall exactly where it fell yesterday.
