Summary
They were hybrids.
Dog-human hybrids, to be exact. Some had ears drooping low against their heads, others curled in on themselves with their tails wrapped tight around their legs. A few had muzzles, some had human faces with only subtle traits—ears, tails, claws. Most were thin. Too thin. Their eyes followed people cautiously, flinching whenever someone stopped in front of their cage.
Giyu felt sick.

“Steve?” Nancy prompted.
“Hey, guys, maybe give him a second, alright?” Eddie said gently, his voice felt like a cool cloth on a feverish forehead, Steve could have easily sighed in relief and relaxed into it.
“A second?” Jonathan said, his voice louder and rougher than Eddie’s, Steve could imagine him gesturing wildly around them just from the way he was speaking. “I don't know if you noticed, Munson, but we’re currently embedded in some freaky flesh-wall-thing.”
“You’re totally right, Byers, I hadn’t noticed that,” Eddie said, slightly sharper but still quiet enough not to cause Steve any pain. “Guess I missed the entire crash, lucky me.”

Dread twists uncomfortably in his gut. Is he talking about the Tokitou kid? He does seem depressed—or, well, he did. He’s been differently lately. Lighter. The dull look in his eyes seems to have lifted. So, probably not him.
“Understood, Oyakata-sama,” he says. “I will be patient, and I will be persistent.”
“I know you will, Sanemi. You have a kind heart.”
Well, Sanemi wouldn’t go that far, but sure.
“Please, Sanemi, vow to me that you will never stop trying with this one. Even if I am no longer here to see it.”
The words hit Sanemi hard, and he swallows. “I swear it, Oyakata-sama.”
The master seems to sink in relief.
“It is Giyuu,” the master says softly, and Sanemi stiffens in shock. “He is the one I worry for. He has lost his will to live.”
OR:
What if, instead of Tanjirou, Sanemi was the one to check on Giyuu?

Giyuu is not a big person. Actually – if his colleagues are to believed – he’s rather short for a Hashira. Still, the baby looks impossibly small in his hands. And this is horrible. He’s the last person who should be responsible for a child.
Or well another child. And this one is even younger than Nezuko, who at least always had her brother. His new find has no one.
He whines, very unbefitting for his position.
