Summary
Shane wishes that he could say he doesn't see it happen, but he does.
They've been on the attack in Edmonton's zone for nearly two minutes, and their opponents are getting tired and desperate. Ilya is in front of the net, right where Shane should be. Every player on the ice has been moving in and out of position, trying to keep their attack going, and he ends up by the blue line when Chouinard takes a shot that flies towards the goal.
Ilya shift to side in hopes of tipping the puck in, and an Edmonton defenseman lunges forward with his stick lifted in hopes of blocking the shot.
The puck rings off the crossbar, and Ilya drops.

Ilya felt a perhaps-misplaced sense of pride. This was monumental, especially for Shane. Ilya couldn’t begin to anticipate how the world at large would react, how his team would respond, how the league would act. Ilya was deeply impressed and even more anxious. His fingers itched to text Hollander, to say something, but what? "I know we hardly talk unless we’re going to fuck, and I know you ran away when I tried to be something more to you, and I know we haven’t spoken in two months, but I’m very proud of you." Hollander would delete his number, maybe, or worse: give him some PR answer. "Thank you, Rozanov. That’s very kind."
Ilya stared at his last text thread with Jane. It was about Hollander coming to his house in Boston, just hours before things had fallen apart. He’d returned to it at least a dozen times now, poring over their last conversation for any idea of where he went wrong. It wasn’t in the texts, he knew. Ilya turns his phone off and instead turns on the television, flipping to the closest sports gossip channel.
Sure enough, Hollander is the hot topic at hand.
