Summary
Forced into an early retirement by a near-fatal injury, Soap finds himself out of a job, out of money, and out of options. When a childhood best friend accidentally gets him involved in a debt to some dangerous people, Soap becomes desperate to pay them back, at the risk of losing his life. In an attempt to help him out, Nik offers him a job cleaning an old house, with a catch: The previous tenant might still live in the house, even though he's been dead for several years.
Over time, Soap begins to unravel the pieces of another man’s life and tragedy. The more he learns, the more he feels oddly enamored with this stranger haunting him. He can’t help but fall in love with him, but is it even possible to love someone who is already a ghost?

Summary
After Soap's death, Ghost remembers a conversation they'd had months before. Johnny had been rambling about some daft Scottish folktale—something about Loch Lomond, and how the spirit always finds its way home, even if the body never does.
Ghost hadn't thought much of it at the time.
Until now.
Months after Johnny's death, he's sorting through the few belongings Soap left behind. Tucked between pages of messy notes, half-finished sketches and sarcastic observations is a single entry.
Johnny had always wanted to bring Ghost to Loch Lomond. To show him that if he ever didn't make it home... Ghost would always be able to find him there.
On the bonnie, bonnie banks of Loch Lomond.
So ghost does the only logical thing with his grief.
He goes to the banks of Loch Lomond to find his Johnny.
To spend one final moment with him.

Summary
Ghost had learned the rhythm of Soap's movements.
He knew the scrape of his boots against the floorboards when his knee was hurting badly. He knew the quieter tread that meant Soap was tired enough to stop joking. He knew how long it took him to make tea, not coffee, despite Soap’s many complaints, and how loudly he swore when the kettle refused to cooperate, how he hummed under his breath when concentrating on something.
Ghost had spent most of his career learning not to know the people he had to work with. Names became liabilities. Habits became weaknesses. Familiarity became something an enemy could use.
Soap had somehow slipped past all of that without either of them noticing.
Ghost found himself watching the door whenever Soap went out.

"Soap shook his head in disbelief. "If I cared about any of that, I wouldn't be standing here right now." He reached for Ghost's hand in the dark and held it tightly. "Feel this?" He pulled his hand up to his face, letting Ghost's gloved palm sit on his cheek. "I'm here right now. I'm taking the step first. It's okay to dip your feet in, but I'm in as long as you are."
