Summary
“You’re the brat’s favorite,” Garp says, in the tone of voice he uses when he thinks someone’s stupid. Ace normally rears up in anger when he uses that tone, but this time, what Garp said has him blinking at him in shock.
Ace says blankly, “I’m his favorite?” Well, Ace guesses, it does make sense – Luffy doesn’t really have anyone else that stays with him. Garp’s never here, Dadan doesn’t really care about them, or at least not enough to stay around them all the time, and Makino- well. She’s amazing, but she can’t be there all the time. Still, though- “Why?”
This time, Garp turns around fully to look at Ace. “Why?” He asks incredulously. “You’re his brother and he loves you, duh.”
Ace’s brain stalls.

Summary
“Fine. Whatever. I’m Ace.” The kid says it quick enough Shanks almost misses it, like he’s afraid someone will hear. The name tugs at him. A half-formed memory of the worn-smooth boards of the Oro, Roger’s sword at the tip of his throat, a full-bellied laugh as he’s picked back up. As soon as it comes, it’s vanished.
“Just Ace?” Shanks asks, like he’s still all there.
“Yeah,” he says, shortly. “Just Ace.”
