Summary
This one-shot is a sequel to my earlier 20-chapter story, “Please, God, Let Me Live,” and it follows the events of the series premiere, “A Study in Pink”. John moves out of his old bedsit and into 221B Baker Street. In the process, he ponders the dramatic changes that his life has just most unexpectedly undergone. Summary
In this pre-Sherlock story and prequel to the series premiere, “A Study in Pink,” Captain John Hamish Watson, MBBS, licensed general practitioner, and combat surgeon in training, is shot while on a retrieval mission in Afghanistan, and spends weeks afterwards battling complications and fighting for his life. Originally written and posted as a one-shot about the day he was shot, it has since been expanded into a 20-chapter story, covering the time from John’s shooting until he's returned to London. Be forewarned: Sherlock himself makes no appearance at all in this story!
I’ve modeled this story on Pompey’s “On Afghanistan’s Plains,” which is posted on Fanfiction.net. So is this story, for that matter! =) (Thanks to BesleyBean for beta-reading and Brit-picking my story! And to sgam76 for helping me to get some details straight.)

This was written pre S2, in response to a lovely and very specific prompt on LJ by morganstuart: "Sherlock and John have finally been released from hospital and are back home to recover from rather serious injuries. Moriarty's still out there. Thanks to Mycroft's people and Scotland Yard, however, 221B is under constant surveillance and protective watch 24/7. It takes Sherlock and John several days to discover that, despite all the other safety measures, Lestrade's been spending most of his nights in his car in front of their flat, quietly guarding them in person. Ever since he helped pull their broken bodies from the rubble, he's found it hard to sleep."
Basically, this is a love letter to Lestrade, the friend.
