Arthur is still staring at the innkeeper like she’s sprouted antlers, mouth half-open in a mix of confusion and barely concealed alarm. He swallows hard, clearly trying to piece together a response. Merlin’s hand tightens helpfully on his shoulder to keep him from doing something stupid. Finally, voice cracking slightly, he manages: “Isn’t... isn’t magic outlawed?”
The woman shrugs, entirely unbothered. “Maybe where you’re from.”

“Not guilty,” Merlin spits out. “That wasn’t even magic.”
“The smoke looked like a cat!” Uther protests.
“Like a cat sitting down, which is a relatively nondescript shape!”
“So you admit it looked like a cat!”
“Only vaguely. God, not everything is sorcery, you stupid arrogant old coot!”
The court gasps. Gaius looks like he wants to melt into the floor. Gwaine looks five seconds away from bursting into laughter, which will likely get him banished again. Lance also looks like he wants to laugh, but only because Merlin knows what to look for.
“That’s treason, boy,” Uther spits back.
“And so is magic. God, make up your mind on what reason you’ve decided on for executing.”
“I SAW YOU!” Uther roars. “You were smiling at the smoke! You were making a mockery of Sir Ulfius’ funeral!”

After Merlin gets accused of having magic for stupid reasons, he decides to take matters into his own hands. Arthur is going to have the worst week of his life, but Uther will be having a worse one. After all, doesn't that bastard deserve a little magical chaos in his kingdom?Basically, Merlin decides to go a little crazy and haunt Uther specifically.
