Summary
His heart is still pounding. He leans against the wall of a nearby store and waits for his nerves to settle. Though actually, who the hell knows. Maybe there's a vein embedded in it, and he's really leaning on one of Maruki's tendrils again. It was days ago that happened, and he still has nightmares about it.
He breathes. He's okay. Everything's fine. How could it be otherwise?
Alone in Maruki's reality, surrounded by ghosts and the twisted veins of Mementos, Ren fights a hopeless battle against despair. A wounded blue butterfly flutters at the edge of his vision.

All alone on the streets of Tokyo, Ren Amamiya is making a name for himself of such influence and danger that no one in the city's dark underworld can afford not to know it. But a trio of tired and jaded adults, and one tired and jaded Phantom Thief, see glimmers of the boy hiding behind it.

"Don't," says Akechi. His voice shakes. He wraps his arms around his middle like he's bleeding out from his core. "Go away. Don't bother with me, there's no point, I'm dead, I... fuck." He laughs, but even Ren, the curator of all things Goro Akechi, has never heard him make such a sound; despair has always taken him differently, wild and keening, barely leashed.
For a moment, Ren is back in the engine room, with Akechi crumpled on the cold floor before him, defeated and alone. Instinct screams a warning in the back of his head.
Under the effects of despair, Akechi lets slip a secret he would have preferred to take back to the grave. It's a kick in the teeth—no, it's worse, it's so much worse—but Ren can deal with it. He can deal with anything. He has to.
He wishes his friends would stop asking if he's okay.

"All right," says Akechi, settling grimly into his booth seat like he's getting ready for a war. "I'll entertain your misguided opinions. What elevates Black Condor above every other Featherman not just in the current flight, but in every other flight that's ever been on the screen?"
And once again Ren is staring the awkward truth in the face. I'm not really into Featherman. I lied the other day. I just couldn't cope with living in Tokyo without you, so I had to take weird measures, haha. Yeah, you're right, it is pretty pathetic. No, don't leave.
It starts when Ren buys a Featherman keychain in memory of his rival. No problems so far, except that his rival is dead, and Tokyo is a hollowed-out husk without him. But when Ren runs into Akechi at a midnight premiere, the landscape changes, and he's faced with his biggest challenge since he killed his last god: Convince Goro Akechi that he likes Featherman.

"Then what brought you out here?" asks Lala. "To pay a premium for sparkling water?"
"Oh, you know," says the uptight boy, lip curling. "Life. Love. The sort of thing you hear a lot, I imagine."
There's something wrong with Goro. He doesn't care if Ren wears a dress, yet every time Ren puts one on, it feels like the world is ending all over again. For his boyfriend's sake, Goro needs to fix what's broken inside him, even if that requires drastic measures; even if it forces him to talk about his issues with a stranger. Or, worse, talk about them with Ren.
