Jack stood up to protest, but more of the guards intervened as Daniel was hustled out of the cell and the door relocked. Jack picked himself up off the floor. The soldiers let go of Daniel’s arms and backed away quickly, leaving him standing alone in front of their leader who began speaking in the language that Daniel said was Greek. Daniel appeared to be arguing with him. The man stepped in closer and purred something, nodding towards the soldiers lining the walls. Jack caught Daniel’s eyes flickering back toward him, and Daniel began unbuttoning his shirt.

Even falling down drunk, Sam Axe is still a man I am very glad to have on my side, particularly when I’m ziptied to a chair getting the bejeezus beat out of me after a job goes south. Of course, I was pretty out of it by the time my brother Nate, of all people, found Sam at his bar of the week, where he was midway through one of his more serious benders. And don’t get me wrong, I’m damned grateful he showed up and kicked the bad guys’ asses, even with most of a bottle of scotch running around in his bloodstream, but the problem is, you put me in a lot of pain and then have someone with alcohol on his breath put a hand on me, even to check for a pulse, and I tend to get a little confused about how old I am.

Summary
Waking up in the dark with your hands zip-tied behind your back is never a good thing. When you’re a spy it’s doubly bad. Today, though, when the heavy footsteps that had woken me stopped nearby and a door swung open, I was actually hopeful. I’d only spoken briefly so far with the man I’d come here to meet (he hadn’t given me a name, so I’d decided to call him Joe Smiley, for obvious reasons), so maybe now I would finally get some answers about why I had been burned and what this shadow organization wanted from me.
What I saw, though, when Goon 1 and Goon 2 dragged me by the arms into a better lit room flushed any such hopes straight down the crapper. Smiley was there alright, but with his right hand he was gripping my buddy Sam Axe by the hair. Sam was on his knees.

Summary
An AU where the protomolecule has been destroyed, but it has already disturbed the balance of the system. Earth and Mars are launched into war, lasting only a few bitter months before Mars is defeated. Now the unchallenged masters of the system, Earth demands reparations from the defeated nation that affects the crew of the Roci in ways they couldn’t imagine.
