“Mo Ran, look at me.” Mo Ran tries to look up at his shizun but his vision is too blurred. “Calm down and listen to me. I need you to think carefully. Do you have any idea who did this to you?”
“I- I don’t know!” Mo Ran’s panic is overwhelming him. He can’t think clearly. All he can see is the fear in Chu Wanning’s eyes. Chu Wanning is afraid and he doesn’t even know about his past life. He doesn’t know how cruel Mo Ran really is. Was. Is. Through his tears, Mo Ran sobs, “Shizun! I really can’t think of anything!”
For the first time in two lifetimes, Chu Wanning reaches across the table and pulls Mo Ran’s hands into his own. “It’s okay, Mo Ran. We’ll figure this out together. I will protect you.”

“A-Ning? What are you doing out here alone?” Chu Wanning jumps and spins around in the snow. Mo Ran is walking up to him, smiling. “Can I sit?”
Chu Wanning nods and scooches over a little so Mo Ran has room on his cloak. Mo Ran sits, bumping shoulders with Chu Wanning. “What are you doing out here?” he asks again.
Chu Wanning replies with the truth: “Didn’t want to be in the crowd.”
Mo Ran pulls off his own cloak and drapes it over the two of them. “That’s a good idea. But you should have waited for me. I’ll sit with you so you don’t have to be alone.”
