Severus regretted many things in his life. He couldn't even start naming them, but becoming a Death Eater probably topped the list. Loosing Lily's friendship was a close second. So, when he told the Dark Lord about the prophecy involving the Chosen one, he realised that that was his worst decision, because Voldemort chose the Potters. He chose Lily's child.
He tried with Dumbledore, offering his loyalty to the wizard so he could save her life. She was supposed to be protected, to be safe, with her child and the asshole she had for husband. They were supposed to be safe. But it was well known that the Dark Lord couldn't be stopped. All Severus tried was in vain. Being a spy, he should've known someone had betrayed the Potters, someone close to them, but the information about Godric's Hollow came too late to him.
At the doorstep of the Potters, the regret was burning what was left of his heart, seeing that he was too late. The second floor was destroyed, and the Potters were dead. Except one. Except Harry.
