Summary
“I can’t just make some announcement, ‘hey everyone, Ilya babysat my kids, he’s a great guy!’”
Hayden threw his hands up in the air.
“I mean, actually you can, sweetie, but I was thinking something more gradual.”
... ... ...
The one where Hayden is actually the hero of the story, because Jackie talks him into rehabilitating Ilya’s asshole image by publicly defending him, several times. The reactions to the FanMail are different this time, because of Hayden.Series

Summary
“That’s wild, man. That is just weird.” Yannic paused. “You really think someone speaks Russian but is hiding it from you and just using it to do nice things for you?”
“Well, that is the question. Why would anyone do that? Why not just say they speak Russian?” Rodion had been wondering this all morning.
… … … …
A side story wherein Shane accidentally reveals that he speaks Russian while still playing for Montreal, which results in a cat and mouse game with a minor leaguer.
OC Rodion Tsetsov - Laval Arrows minor league center called up to replace a player.

Ooooo these original characters felt so fleshed out! What a great take on the outsider POV trope.

Summary
Shane makes a list: reasons to Come Out on one side and to Stay Safe on the other. It's definitely not meant to accidentally star in the background of his mom's Instagram post for fans to find.
But now that the world knows, maybe Shane can finally let himself have everything he's wanted.
If only Ilya didn't go out and get engaged the next day. Which is fine! Rozanov was settling down? Shane could settle down, too. He would find himself a nice man.

Summary
Rozanov cocked his head. “You speak Russian? Or just the curse words?”
“Yes, I speak Russian,” he snapped, defensive and angry. He knew that it had been a mistake to even try to be friendly with Rozanov. “Why? Do I not look Russian to you?” He scoffed.
“No, not really,” Rozanov said. Some of his teammates laughed, although they mostly looked surprised that Shane was speaking to them at all. Rozanov didn’t laugh, though. “Are you Russian?”
“Go fuck yourself.”

Despite an inauspicious start, when Russia’s Ilya Rozanov learns that Canada’s Shane Hollander is fluent in Russian at their first World Junior Championships tournament, it changes everything and sets them on a different course. Instead of being branded as rivals from the very beginning, Ilya and Shane start off as friends.
And, after all, a little friendly rivalry never hurt anyone, did it?

Bookmarker's Notes
Read this story in summer 2026, then reread on flight from Taipei to SFO. Great read and looking forward to another reread in the future. :)
