    Inspired by a tumblr post by @goldenaltar about a no astrophage/space diplomacy AU I literally could NOT stop thinking about since I first read it.

    The first collaboration between eridians and humans involves planning for a proper first contact, out in space so their respective interstellar trip times are cut (approximately) in half. Grace was conscripted for ‘Project Neighborhood’ as one of many biologists on the team. He sneaks out to the tunnel connecting their ships after hours to try and catch a glimpse of a Real Life Alien - and there's an eridian on the other side who has the exact same idea.

    When their sneaking around catches up to them, they're forced to consider the implications of all this sneaking around, and maybe lean into them a little to keep from being thrown out the nearest airlock - or starting an intergalactic war.

    Against all odds, the e-mail is sitting in the ship's inbox, video attachment waiting to be opened. His headache is definitely getting worse trying to make sense of this. Yeah, he's going to stop trying to wrap his head around it. Better to take it at face value.

    An e-mail, in space. An e-mail, as the ship continues to hurtle towards its final destination. An e-mail that shouldn't exist, but there it is!

    No, wait. It's here, floating around in his jumbled-up brain. Too many things happened for him to comprehend in those first few hours upon waking. What did he do as he was lumbering around, confused out of his mind? Asked the ship to contact Earth. The reply he received had kick-started the true and utter fear.

    "Current transmission time to Earth is 11 years, 10 months, 14 days and 6 hours."
