Summary
His eyes drifted to the gravestone, and he squinted against the darkness to make out the words engraved upon it. He first took note of the years marked. The man had only been thirty-nine years old when he’d passed. Next, Simon’s gaze passed over the epitaph, which read, Find someone to be brave for.
Finally, as Simon shoveled the last bit of dirt into the grave, he read the name of the man whose body would soon be studied by the scholars of Eden. It was, he decided, a name worth remembering.
Dr. Ryland Grace.
Simon has seen countless dead bodies in his time working as a resurrectionist for Eden, as it has been his job to retrieve corpses for their scholars to study. Usually the corpses don't stand up on their own, though. They also aren't usually so hungry.

“Not know that for sure. No studies, no data, bad bad bad.”
A mere week away from reaching Erid, Simon overhears an argument between Grace and Rocky, one concerning a secret that Grace apparently should have told Simon long ago. Whatever it is that Grace and Rocky aren't telling him, it's a liability, and if they won't tell him themselves, he'll figure it out on his own. Unfortunately for Simon, this causes problems.
If Simon thought his encounters with monsters had ended when he escaped the blood ocean, he was very wrong.

Summary
For a selkie, to be separated from their coat can be one of the hardest challenges they may face, maybe apart from being away from the ocean. Being lightyears away from the nearest ocean with no hope of return is a fate worse than death, but at least Grace has his coat.
Or: Grace is a selkie, and even though Stratt had the foresight to put his coat on the Hail Mary before it launched, there's no oceans on the spaceship.
