Mel looked up and that was her first memory of Frank Langdon. His handsome face smiling down at the two girls from over the vines and leaves. He spoke softly and even toned, and the fear Mel had that they'd get in trouble was immediately soothed by the kindness in his eyes and smile.
"It looks like a bad cucumber," Becca informed him.
He laughed and motioned the girls over to the other side of the fence where it was easier to see into his yard, and then pointed at another baby melon.
"If you're careful with them, they get bigger and turn into proper watermelons," he explained, "but you have to be gentle with them when they're babies like this."
