    Lan Xichen pauses before he speaks. He often does. “A-Yao, will you…?”

    There are any number of things that Lan Xichen might be about to say. He might be about to say, “A-Yao, will you cook breakfast while I bathe in the river?” But then, there is a gravity to his tone, and a flush on his cheeks. So perhaps it will be, “A-Yao, will you do that thing with your tongue?” Or even more thrillingly, “A-Yao, will you teach me how to do that thing with your tongue?”

    Lan Xichen does not say any of these things. He says, “A-Yao, will you marry me? If we both survive the war, will you marry me?”

    Lan Xichen proposes before the war. Somehow, through the property of transitivity, Wei Wuxian becomes Meng Yao’s problem to solve.

    Lan Zhan’s new liaison at the Caiyi Municipal Cultivation Department is an enigma – ridiculously talented, yet somehow content with mopping up spiritual pests for barely above minimum wage. The single father is a man of many secrets – including, perhaps, the key to Lan Zhan's life's work. And in the meantime, the background resentment in Caiyi Town is rising to dangerous levels…

    Wei Ying lets the oars rest and leans back, tilting his head to look at Lan Wangji. “Did you find what you’re looking for? On the docks today?”

    Lan Wangji wants to turn away from his gaze. He isn’t used to being seen. “No,” he says, because he doesn’t know how to explain what he’s looking for in the first place.

    Wei Ying props his chin on his fist. “Can I guess?” Without waiting for an answer, he continues, “You’ve fallen in love with a pirate girl, and you’re waiting for her to steal you away to be the glittering jewel of her collection, so you can live on the open ocean together.” Lan Wangji narrows his eyes at him and Wei Ying bursts into laughter. "Ah well," he says. "I'll get it right next time."
