Summary
Cooper knows he and Lucy are going to need help to take on Hank MacLean and everything Vault-Tec’s done. And he knows just where to find it. Trouble is, the journey will be long and the ‘help’ may not be interested. But he has to try. He owes her. And what better way to pay her back than to give her a chance at changing the world...again?
Or, the Ghoul once took on a bounty for the General of the Minutemen’s head. It didn’t go how he planned. But, then again, nothing in his life ever has.

Summary
She was raised to temper expectations, hope fitted to size. She had carved from herself a shape that behaved like contentment, but she hadn’t known the horizon could stretch beyond perception, soft and fuzzy like a promise. Hadn’t expected foul-mouthed, mean-tempered violence to burn like sugar on the tongue.
Lucy follows the Ghoul into the desert.

Summary
”Bullshit, probie,” he said easily. “You know, a silly little telemarketer bothered me once. Wouldn’t stop calling with some asinine questions. Do you know what I did?”
”You ate him,” Lucy bit out, “with some fava beans and a nice Chianti.”
To her surprise, Cooper Howard threw his head back and laughed, a real laugh this time. It was remarkably warm and inviting, and she was abruptly charmed. Dangerous.
“Yes,” he said, his voice honeyed and fond, “yes sweetheart, I did.”
Lucy knew why she had been sent here.
After all, the world had always loved stories about girls being offered to monsters.

Summary
Lucy followed the Ghoul out of that shell-struck old observatory and through the ruins of things lost so many times over by this point it was a miracle anyone was around who could still put a name to them. Idly, she figured, he might be the only one left around here who could.
So maybe that was why she had thrown her lot in with his without much thought about it. Or maybe it was because she figured he, at least, would be upfront with her if he ever decided to throw her to the wolves. Or maybe, for the briefest of seconds, she had looked at him and thought, wildly, impossibly, that they might be on the same page. Or in the same boat, rather, one without any oars, and which was pitching dangerously.
Or maybe it was something else. Something lesser known. Something like fate, like a little whisper spoken so quietly she didn’t even know she had heard it. But she was listening, now, and the best thing she could do, she figured, was see this through to the end.
The Ghoul walked ahead, having similar internal dilemmas unbeknownst, albeit with significantly more swearing.
