John strolled past the front desk, humming to himself; his thumb swiped over the entry scanner and the transmitter in his pocket got him a go-ahead for John Reese, Executive Security. He rode the elevator up to the thirty-sixth floor and nodded a greeting to the two men on the desk today: both of them watchful, checking him against the day's list of authorized personnel. He made the usual cursory patrol around the floor, getting in face time: Mark Aldredge's secretary and personal assistant, and Mark himself, who glanced up and nodded as John went past his office.
Then John took the stairs back down a flight and onto the thirty-fifth floor, glancing up at the security camera in the corner with a smile before pushing inside. The ten or so server racks nearest the door were full now, with humming servers that covered the sound of his footsteps; but past them a new wall had gone up, with one door set in it marked Authorized Personnel Only, and a palmprint scanner that was actually just a front; the real lock was the micro-dot camera above it, and the door didn't open until John looked at it and let it recognize him.
Harold was already at his desk working, only three of the seven screens lit up, which meant he hadn't gotten another number from the Machine yet. He'd already taken down Judge Gates' picture from the rolling whiteboard John had sneaked out of Dave's office. John perched on the desk and put down the cup of tea he'd picked up on the way and stole a kiss while he was at it: Harold's mouth was curved in a tiny involuntary smile when they parted, even though he cleared his throat, slightly pink in the cheeks, and kept his eyes resolutely on the screen.
"Did you learn anything?" he said.
"Our pal met a friend at the W Hotel." John dropped a stack of photos next to the keyboard: the intruder meeting with another man, an older white-haired man with a dignified nose and a suit almost as nice as the ones Harold had bought him. "I couldn't bluejack either one of them, but I did get a directional mike on their conversation: they're definitely not the government, and they're definitely worried about your Machine."
Harold was already leafing through the photos, frowning. "Did they say anything about their plans for the Machine?"
"Only that they're at a dead end for now," John said. "They're still trying to trace your prints, but they've written off IFT and the building itself. You were right; this is the last place they'll look for you."
Harold's mouth pursed in satisfaction. "That should give us a little breathing room." He studied the best picture, clear shots of both men's faces. "Hm. I would be interested to know if either of these gentlemen turned up in law enforcement facial recognition databases. I'll start with hacking Interpol — "
John sighed theatrically. "You know, Harold, hacking Interpol isn't always the answer." Harold paused and looked at him, eyebrows raised. John took out his phone and flipped through the growing contacts file to the number for Detective Jocelyn Carter, Eighth Precinct, and smiled at Harold. "Sometimes you just need to ask for a little help."

Bookmarker's Notes
It said a lot about what exactly John Riley was made of – read, way too much of a tendency to shoot people, make things explode, and, amongst yet some other things, have thugs peeing themselves just from his presence, it seemed – and Moreno wasn't certain how exactly the man had ended up in the police – or how Fusco managed to work with him, for the matter. Sometimes she felt like John Riley was the scariest criminal in Manhattan, a mix between a broke Bruce Wayne and... well, James Bond out of job – and the NYPD just hadn't gotten the memo when reviewing his candidacy.
Fusco's cellphone rang distinctively, making the detective groan under an impending sense of doom. Trust him to use James Bond's theme as TDS's – Tall, Dark and Stormy – ringtone, but perhaps now wasn't the best moment to have the captain hear it. Even more so if Wonderboy had done the Smirk Thing earlier on, for everyone else to see.
Moreno glanced at the name on display, and sure enough, things went from ridiculous to shitty.
“Put Riley on spearkerphone, Detective Fusco.”
Lionel didn't bother arguing on that one. The only thing he could really do was warning Wonderboy.
“Roger that. Tall, Dark and Stormy? You're on speakerphone, just so you know. Captain's here."
Reese's low, vaguely menacing voice rose from the cellphone with carefully worded sentences.
"Lionel. Leah Blake is safe, I've resolved our case, and I'm staring at the evidence right now."
Lionel almost snorted, wondering why he even bothered trying to pass “Riley” off as a normal police detective. This, really, sounded more like a hitman reporting the results of his latest kill. Or, you know, a government assassin reporting in – not that Wonderboy had ever told him who he was exactly. What Lionel did know about John was black ops and CIA. And freaking terrifying.
Which was enough.
"And?"
"And what?"
"Who died?"
The pause before Riley's answer kind of felt offended by the question, Moreno noted abstractedly.
"Why would someone be dead?"
"You started with the soothing news."
There was a silence on the other end of the conversation. Everyone in the precinct was holding their breath, immediately noticing the lack of denial. Riley wasn't even trying, at this point.
"One of the dealers might have jumped out a window."
"I freaking knew it!!!"
"And the other three seem to have encountered a wall."
Because people jumped out of windows on a daily basis – they did when they had Reese after them – and met face to face with walls everyday – more like Wonderboy had knocked them out against said wall, which, for the sake of accuracy, went with the explanation of an unfortunate encounter.
TDS hang up at that point, leaving Lionel to stare exasperatedly at his phone, before turning to the captain with a look of utter disbelief written all over his face.
"What did I tell you?!? Three things: John Riley, previous life, killer for hire!"
No one in the precinct argued with the detective on that one.

Elias frowned, his eyes on John, as he wondered what Annie O'Connor – he knew the woman well enough, too, and he didn't like the small smile on her face one bit – could have known about “John Riley”, that he didn't know.
Elias had been there too, twenty years ago.
Marconi too, for the matter. And Elias' right-hand man watched as the detective / vigilante / Man in a Suit / probably-very-lethal-man visibly relaxed his stance. Or, so it seemed. Anthony Marconi had met enough experienced killers to be able to tell when someone is even more about to commit a murder than before, and to do so, pretends to relax.
###
The scream died down, and the man gave John a dark, promising look. The kind that said he was going to suffer for this. John didn't particularly care. After all, it wasn't as if he intended to let Dominic – an enemy who knew his original name, who knew he had a brother, here, in NYC – live to hold this promise.
Because John was a “good guy”, his enemies tended to forget – not to realize, even – what he could do, with the right incentive.
Their loss.
“Is there anyone else who knows something, anything, about me and my family, Dominic?”
Riley's tone was flat, cold, unforgiving – not particularly cruel, though... simply, uncaring – and the younger man didn't miss the hidden meaning. He hadn't realized yet who exactly John Riley was... He still had no idea, but he could see what the man was, beneath the benevolent attitude.
It wasn't that Riley / Sullivan / whatever-his-name liked doing what he did... but he didn't mind doing what was necessary, as O'Connor had said. And even the things he minded, he'd do them if there was no other choice.
Riley definitely saw his brother's protection as worthy of being just as much of a monster as the ones he protected him from.
###
He had to get his bullets back before that happened. But first...
John looked at Elias and Marconi as he took out a sharp blade. No time to lose, certainly, because he didn't particularly want to explain to IA why “Detective Riley” was turning a crime scene into... another kind of crime scene entirely. Multitasking.
“Because I am willing to give people a second chance, they tend to forget what I am capable of.”
Elias' upper lip twitched, his eyes fixed on John's hands, expertly extracting one bullet after another.
“Clearly.”
“Because I don't try to kill you the moment things go a bit awry doesn't mean I'm not capable, I hope you'll remember that, Elias. It's just that my priority isn't usually to kill you, but to keep the body count as low as possible. It's all a question of priorities; try not to kill anybody, but try to stay alive first; try to stay alive, but try to save the innocents first; try to save the innocents, but try to protect the ones you care about first. Obviously, if you screw with my priorities, keeping you alive too drops lower on the scale.”
John looked around, searching for the bullets that had gone in and out of his victims' heads.
“I wouldn't want to have to kill you, Elias.”
The mob boss smiled thinly. Then he headed to the safe he had in the wall, to John's surprise.
“I wouldn't want you to kill me either. Now, what do you think about a destructive fire?”

John was not unobservant. That Harold was starting to look even worse was obvious to everyone, and no one knew what to do about it.
It was an easy decision for John to follow Harold home.
---
Harold was so relieved at Mr. Reese showing signs of life that he didn't even mind.
"Come in, Mr. Reese," he called out into the darkness as soon as he arrived at his destination. Dutifully, a dark shadow slinks to his side.
"Who's house is this?" John asked
"This is Harold Crane," Harold introduced.
That night, Harold had another nightmare. But once again, John was there, and Harold finally managed to get some rest
---
Harold asked him not to follow him home today. As a result, John was bored. On a whim, He followed Nathan and Grace home.
He wasn't sure if he expected them to invite him in, but they did, and he accepted the invitation.
"This is our only house I'm afraid," Grace said over dinner.
John nodded, and asked what the deal was with the numbers.
"What agency are you working for?"
"We'll have to talk with Harold first," Nathan replied
John was okay with that. He wanted to know, but if they didn't want to tell him, that's was okay too.
John was... okay.
They told John the truth over breakfast in the subway. As they ate eggs and doughnuts and bacon, the three of them laid the whole thing out for him: the Machine, the three of them on the run, their shared mission. How close they'd come to being revealed to the government by trying to help Daniel Casey, who had brought John (and therefore Jessica) into their orbit.
When they'd told Grace, she'd pretty much just rolled with it. By contrast, John was floored. He told them he was a little in awe of what they'd managed to do so far, but also,
"How have you survived this long?"
Grace laughed at the affronted expression on Harold's and Nathan's faces. They looked like cats whose tails had been stepped on, offended by the insinuation that between the two rich computer programmers, they didn't really know how to run a secret spying / super hero organization.
Grace loved them so much.
---
After that conversation, there was almost no question that John would help them with the numbers. Harold had offered a small (somewhat baffling) objection, that maybe John should leave them and go have a normal life. To this, John had replied that this was his normal. He'd been an agent for more than a decade. And he was good at it.
Once he got started, John -- the professional -- was utterly ruthless in pointing out all the problems with their setup, and how amateurish they really had been. How a lot of their success had been just luck, not skill, and how their luck was bound to break.
This, Grace thought, was when Nathan really started to warm up to him. Nothing got you into her husband's good graces like competence, even if meant dressing them down a bit. She couldn't quite remember if Nathan had told her about it, but she imagined that this was how he'd met Harold.

You will not," Harold says, firmly, and John steals a kiss from his lips. "I'll take care of it."
John grins. God, he loves Harold. "It's my place."
"And I'm the one who didn't notice the toddler throwing glitter at the ceiling fan until it was everywhere." Harold lays a hand on John's arm. "And this company is not within your budget. Let me handle it."
Harold looks determined, like he needs to be the one who deals with it. "Okay." John strokes his cheek. "Might want to go wash some of this stuff off yourself, too. You look like that guy in those vampire books Jess likes."
Harold makes an affronted face, and John can't help but kiss it away. "You're cuter," he insists. "And you'd make a better vampire. A hotter one."
That gets an eyeroll out of Harold—one with badly hidden amusement. John grins, and against Harold's ear, he adds, dropping his voice down low, "I'd let you suck my blood."
Harold shivers, and John kisses his irresistible cheek again.
