Dying. Robert was dying.
He didn’t want to die.
Something hadn’t wanted to die, at least. He wondered sometimes, if it had really been him that night, clinging to life. Or if it had been the venom, already clawing up his brainstem, sifting desperately through the shredded remains of its new host's nervous system.
Mauled and sick-dog rabid. His father would have put him down without hesitation.

Or: Robert is a vampire. He's dealing with it fine. Perfectly fine. And his new job dispatching the ex-villain he put in prison years ago as Mecha Man? Also not a problem. All he needs is to keep his identity, and his condition, secret, and everything will be perfectly, completely, manageable.

Things have calmed down after the fight against Shroud and Flambae stumbles upon a stranded dispatcher:
He could've just left there and then, but his curiosity got the better of him. Arms crossed in front of his broad chest he towered over him.
"Wake up, bitch." His harsh voice cut through the silence like a razor, and the man below him jerked in his seat. The book slowly slipped from his face and revealed a set of cloudy and confused eyes with way too dark circles around them. Robert blinked up to him, puzzled and still half asleep.
